We used to raise bulls like most other outfits—calve in January and February, develop calves on grain to make 1,200 lb at about a year of age and push for more growth. But for a variety of reasons, we changed. We think it's possible to make ranching more enjoyable and profitable by focusing on what cattle do best—grazing. Continued selection for maximum growth makes for large cows that require large amounts of feed. Good moderate cows will net better returns. The math is pretty straightforward, and I don't like getting up in the middle of the night in February to check heifers just because it's below zero out. [More]
