From time to time we get questions on how we record calf birth weights. We check cows twice a day during calving season. If we find a newborn in the morning, we weigh and tag it in the evening. Similarly, if we find one in the evening we weigh and tag it the following morning. We don’t want to interfere with colostrum intake or establishing maternal bonding. It also gives the cow a chance to settle down.

We use an electronic platform scale in an ATV-mounted “calf catcher”. Is it a perfect system, probably not but the weights are pretty accurate.

When it comes to selecting breeding bulls, we think the genetic-enhanced EPD for Calving Ease Direct is the best tool for selecting bulls to use on heifers.

We say we calve on green grass in May, but that wasn’t the case in 2026. Drought was tough in our area.
